Bean bags and cushions feature in ‘retro’ club

Bean bags and cushions feature in 'retro' clubRevellers at one Indian bar have the chance to chill out on comfy bean bag chairs and luxurious cushions.

An Indian Express article notes that the recently-opened Vertigo bar in Hotel Himani offers “a retro club feel” and contains a number of cushions and low-level seating to help give the impression that it is somewhere cosy for people to relax.

“We didn’t want to cramp up space and intentionally gave it an open feel,” owner Ankit Gupta explains.

Corona and Heineken are among the beverage brands that can be purchased at the bar which is targeted specifically at young people and those on a budget.

“There are many fine dining restaurants and clubs in the city but most are not youth centric and budget-friendly. The music will range from pop to jazz to trance and R&B over the weekends,” he tells the publication.

But this is not the only place offering young people a place to chill out bean bag chairs. Reuters recently noted that at this year’s The Big Chill and Latitude festival, Boutique Babysitting will run a childcare service allowing kids the chance to chill on children’s bean bag chairs, while their parents enjoy some live music.

Bean bag chair ‘a favourite place for child to read’

Bean bag chair 'a favourite place for child to read'Children’s bean bags could prove a popular way to get kids to read if the comments of one 11-year-old girl are anything to go by.

Speaking to Florida Today, Kiara Kitchen reveals how the bean bag in her home is her favourite place to read.

“I can move it to where my mother is so she can see me read,” Kiara claims.

It appears she spends a significant amount of time curled up on such seating, as the Riverview Elementary pupil states she reads for 30 minutes each day reading at home, in addition to another half-hour at school.

But Kiara seems keen to spend even more time on bean bags, as she claims that she would like to read more.

And she may not be alone in seeking out children’s bean bags as a cosy place to read. The publication notes her school and nine others in the area are currently taking part in the 100 Book Challenge, an initiative that rewards children for reading independently.

Meanwhile, the Downtown Express reported that the children’s section of the recently-opened Battery Park City branch of the New York Public Library features a number of orange bean bag cubes and chairs, allowing kids to read in comfort.

Luxury throw and cushions ‘add sense of style to couple’s home’

Luxury throw and cushions 'add sense of style to couple's home'One couple are using luxury throws and cushions to help add a sense of style to their property.

A Courier-Journal article reports that Carol and Gary Jones have created a home that is not only “unique and comfortable” but one that has been done on a budget.

The pair, who live in La Grange, Kentucky, are revealed to have used black and white patterned cushions in their kitchen.

And such soft furnishings are in line with the rest of this room’s designs, as “white cabinets and counters are highlighted by the black round table with four black chairs”.

Upstairs, meanwhile, the couple have teamed together a beige cushion, a faux fur throw – in the image of leopard-print – and a futon in order to “provide cosy seating”.

But this is not the only time that the use of luxury throws and cushions has been recommended. A recent article in Ugandan newspaper the Daily Monitor advised homeowners to use silk faux fur cushions in animal prints such as zebra and tiger to help spruce up their living space.

Bean bag chairs feature in university centre

Bean bag chairs feature in university centreThrough the use of bean bag chairs, one university centre is hoping to imitate the offices located in Silicon Valley.

According to an article in The Eyeopener, the Digital Media Zone (DMZ) at Ryerson University is looking to cultivate a space where technology students at the institution come together to collaborate on projects and receive business advice.

With the centre featuring “a sea of beanbag chairs”, touchscreen display and an open-plan layout, the publication claims the centre feels more like the offices that can be found in the Silicon Valley area of California – home to businesses such as Google and Adobe – than a university space.

“This is about creating reputation, building brand and really building an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship in Toronto,” Dave Senior, community manager for the DMZ, points out.

And large bean bags have featured at a recent technology conference in the US. Writing for Geekosystem, Susana Polo revealed how the Penny Arcade Expo East in Boston was “littered” with bean bag chairs, on which people played computer games, ate and napped.

Dog beds feature in actress’ car

A Canadian actress and comedian has highlighted how dog beds are just one of the essentials she keeps in her car.

Speaking to Metro Canada, Sharron Matthews notes that she keeps a pair of “huge” dog beds in her 2003 Ford Explorer.

With one of her dogs weighing some 120 lbs, she points out the vehicle is “the only thing” that can carry herself, her husband, their pets and all their gear.

“We had thought about getting a smaller car, but we realized we couldn’t do it,” she claims.

And the Toronto-based entertainer – who has starred in the likes of Beauty and the Beast and Les Miserables – may find her car is not only loaded up with dog beds but a whole host of other possessions as they prepare to take a road trip.

“This summer, we’re taking a road trip out to Fredericton because my husband’s doing a play out there,” Matthews states.

But those seeking dog bean bags may be interested to note the actress isn’t the only one to have dog beds. Writing for The Stir, Juliet Farmer reveals she has three dog beds in her home – one in her living room, office and bedroom – despite only owning one canine.

Surfing film festival to feature large bean bag chairs

Surfing film festival to feature large bean bag chairsFilm fanatics will have the chance to cosy up on large bean bags while taking in surfing movies at an upcoming festival in New Zealand.

Between April 10th and 17th the Arthouse Cinema in New Plymouth will screen a number of features dedicated to the sport, Taranaki Daily News reports.

With Hana Surf Girls, Dear & Yonder and Sea of Darkness among the titles to be screened, attendants will have the option of settling down on bean bag chairs or sitting on a zebra-striped couch to watch the films.

Some 20 movies to be screened over the week and the numerous food stalls which are to be set up could ensure those chilling on bean bags sofas have something to munch on while they watch some surfing action.

Those keen to take in more of the sport may want to check out the Women’s World Championship Tour competition which is to be held in the city at the same time. However, spectators wishing to watch the action from the comfort of the beach may want to take waterproof bean bags so their seating does not get damaged by the sea!

But this is not the first time that bean bags and surfing have come together. GoldCoast.com.au recently reported that the Komune hotel in Australia – which is dedicated to all things surf and beach culture-related – has a number of “new age” bean bags around its outside swimming pool.

Convention attendees relax on bean bags

A blogger has highlighted how a gaming conference in Boston saw attendees use bean bag chairs.

Writing for Geekosystem, Susana Polo highlights how the portable gaming lounges at Penny Arcade Expo East event were “littered” with Sumo bean bags.

And not only did people use such seating to play computer games, she notes that the “always well-populated” seating saw people eat and take naps on them.

Trying the bean bags out herself, Ms Polo claims they were “incredibly comfortable” as she sat down for a spot of Sunday lunch.

With Nintendo DS, Sony PSPs, netbooks and mobile phones among the platforms that the games were played on, the convention also offered those in attendance – whether they choose to sit on bean bag chairs or otherwise – the chance to use free Wi-Fi.

Of course this is not the first time that computer games and bean bags have come together. Not only are teenagers and young people across the country likely to possess such seating to play on their favourite titles, but Hampshire Business recently noted the new Southampton office of PEER1 features a number of bean bags and games consoles for staff.
