Watch films for free while sat on bean bag chairs at Seattle event

Clapper boardMovie lovers are being encouraged to pull up bean bag chairs before watching films that will be projected on a 45 ft screen.

The Seattle Center Movies at the Mural event sees a number of family-friendly films put on at the US city’s Mural Amphitheatre over the course of August.

And vampire fans may want to arrive with their bean bag chairs in good time on August 21st, as the event will be screening Twilight – the cinematic adaption of the first book in the series of novels penned by Stephenie Meyer.

The second in the series – New Moon – will be shown the following day on August 22nd.

In addition, the Princess Bride and the recent Star Trek move – starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto – will also be screened as part of Seattle Center Movies at the Mural.

And with a number of food stalls selling drinks and snacks, moviegoers will be able to munch in comfort as they sit on bean bag sofas to watch the action.

But this is not the first time that there has been a link between bean bag chairs and watching films on the big screen. Will Arbery revealed in a D Magazine article that he watched Toy Story 3 while sat on a bean bag chair at the Inwood Theater in Dallas, Texas.

Summer school camp encourages kids to read on bean bag chairs

children and booksChildren at one school in North Carolina are being given the chance to develop their reading skills this summer while sat on bean bag chairs.

A Mount Airy News article reveals that by running the Camp Read-a-lot event, the J J Jones Intermediate School in Mount Airy has set up a reading zone where students can sit on children’s bean bags to read quietly.

“The summer institute is for children to continue to develop a love of reading and increase their skills. The children are just loving it,” Vickie Cameron, executive director of curriculum and instruction for the city’s council, claims.

They also have the ability to play computer games aimed at helping them with their spelling and reading, with maths and history among the other subjects that are taught during the two-week camp.

However, this is not the only school to provide bean bag chairs for pupils to sit on. The Gotham Gazette reported in April that the common room of the Global Technology in the Harlem district of New York contains children’s bean bags, giving them the chance to check their email and talk to friends before lessons start.

Refurbished library features bean bag chairs

BeanbagA Cardiff library is to reopen following a £1 million refurbishment, with the facility now featuring bean bag chairs as it hopes to attract more young people.

Due to open its doors tomorrow (June 26th) for the first time since it was shut down last autumn, the 104-year-old Carnegie library in Cathays has undergone significant restoration work, the South Wales Echo reports.

And bean bag sofas have played a key role in this, as the library now features a number of the comfy seats, branch libraries manager Fiona Bailey reveals.

“Because of the area we serve, with a lot of students and young families, we wanted it to have a more 21st century contemporary feel while preserving the building’s features,” she claims.

In addition to bean bag chairs, the library has been fitted with Wi-Fi internet access and radio cataloguing equipment, although a number of its original features such as the domed skylight have been retained.

But the Carnegie is not the first library to have bean bag seating. In April, WeAreCentralPA.com reported that the newly-designed early reader section of the Claysburg Area Public Library in Pennsylvania features a number of children’s bean bags.

Reviewer takes in Toy Story 3 on bean bag chair

Toy Story 3One writer has revealed how he watched the new Toy Story film while sat on bean bag chairs.

In a D Magazine article, Will Arbery reveals that he saw the animated movie at the Inwood Theater in Dallas, Texas. And as the cinema’s downstairs screen features bean bag chairs and couches, he notes it “was filled with toddlers, climbing over their seats and their parents and each other”.

Pointing out that “the energy in this chaotic playpen was infectious and pure”, he clams that the Pixar-produced movie “is nothing short of a spiritual banquet for all ages”.

Indeed, he appears to have had such a good time watching the film while sat on bean bag chairs that he compared it to The Hurt Locker, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2009.

Toy Story 3 is due for theatrical release in the UK next month and while your local cinema may not feature bean bag sofas like the Inwood, you might want to catch up on the previous two films at home, watching them on DVD while curled up on a leather bean bag.

Starring Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as Woody and Buzz Lightyear, the series of films tells the adventures of one boy’s set of toys who come to life when people are not around.

Football fans take in World Cup on bean bag chairs

Football fans take in World Cup on bean bag chairs

Football fans staying at one hotel in Abu Dhabi have been able to take in World Cup games while relaxing on comfy bean bag chairs.

An article by The National reveals that around 200 people went to the Emirates Palace hotel’s football lounge to watch Switzerland take on Chile.

And with the viewing area containing some 21 televisions, the publication indicates people would have had a screen to watch, no matter which bean bag sofa or chair they decided to sit on.

Susanne Baumgartner, executive director of the Swiss Business Council, claimed being able to watch the match at the luxury hotel added to the experience.

“For people to be in [the] Emirates Palace and watch the game, I think it is something to tell your people back home,” she states, adding that supporters were encouraged to sing and cheer from their bean bag chairs as they watched the game.

However, this is not the first time people have chosen to watch the World Cup while sat on bean bags.

Speaking to Sunshine Coast Daily last week, Aussie teenager Alex Ollier revealed he had converted half of his parents’ garage into a special lounge featuring bean bag chairs so he can watch the tournament.

Canine relaxes on office dog bed while owner works

RottweilerA software designer has revealed how his canine – Daphne – chills out on a dog bed while he works.

Speaking to AnnArbor.com, Rob Raux points out his two-year-old rottweiler gets a lot of attention and company every day, as she sits on the dog bed located in his basement office while his wife and children are away at work and school.

During his lunch break, he indicates that he plays with Daphne one-on-one before he goes back to work in the afternoon and she returns to her dog bed.

“She’s a great dog and we feel at this young age she’s more settled and less needy than she might be if this arrangement wasn’t in place,” he states.

But Daphne is not the first canine to relax on dog beds while their owner works. Speaking to Express Night Out last month, personal trainer George Kassouf claims that his dogs – Buddy and Logan – sit on dog beds while he works with clients in his fitness studio.

Canadian museum features children’s bean bags

Canadian museum features children's bean bags

Kids visiting one museum in Canada have the chance to sit on bean bag chairs while they find out more about the various objects on display.

An article in the Times-Colonist notes that the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria is taking steps to appeal to those under the age of ten, with its child-friendly, interactive zone AmusEum.

This part of the museum is split up into four different zones, which Janet MacDonald, manager of learning and visitor experience, claims gives children the chance to be a scientist for a day.

One part of the exhibition contains a number of colourful children’s bean bags, while there is also a three-dimensional spider web game and a costume dress up area.

“We really believe that career and life paths begin at a really young age,” she points out, suggesting that those kids who decide to dress up as a bee at AmusEum may be inspired to pursue a career in melittology when they are older.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald last month, Bridgette Van Leuven, head of education and performances for young people at the Sydney Opera House, claimed she would like to create a “portable playground” in the arts venue that would feature bean bags. Such an area, she stated, would help make the building “more child-friendly”.

Australia football fanAn Australian football fan has the chance to relax on a bean bag chair while he watches World Cup matches in his purpose-built room.

Speaking to Sunshine Coast Daily, 15-year-old Alex Ollier reveals that he taken over half of his parents’ garage to create a special viewing area to watch this year’s tournament.

Not only does this include a fridge and several posters of football icons, but also a bean bag chair and plush carpets so he and his friends can take in all the action in comfort.

Alex claims he got the money to convert the garage by refereeing inter-school games and tells the publication he is determined not to miss a single game.

He also reveals that that he has purchased a vuvuzela, the horns that have divided opinion among football fans.

“I went out and bought one for the Australian game, but they are pretty annoying, to be honest,” the Dicky Beach teenager states.

But Alex is not the only Aussie soccer fan to be watching the beautiful game on bean bag sofas. NineMSN recently reported that hundreds of supporters have flocked to Durban’s Kingsmead cricket ground to watch the World Cup “in a giant communal marquee”, while sat on gold and green-coloured large bean bag chairs.

Children’s psychiatric ward features bean bag chairs

Children's psychiatric ward features bean bag chairs

Young people at one hospital in Berlin will have the chance to discuss any problems they are facing while sat on children’s bean bags.

A Metropolis Magazine article notes that the new children’s psychiatric ward at the Evangelisches Kinigin Elisabeth Herzberge Hospital has a number of brightly-coloured bean bag chairs and murals of birds and sealife.

Designed by architecture firm Dan Pearlman, the 15,070 sq ft room is said to “look like something out of Robinson Crusoe” and gives youngsters experiencing psychological problems, somewhere to relax.

Named Elise’s Island, the room also comes with a hammock as well as the numerous bean bag chairs and before it was built Dan Pearlman spent time speaking to patients asking them to describe their ideal environment in order to get an idea of what features the facility should offer.

“For a long time, we wanted to have a space which enables our specific types of therapy to become effective,” the psychiatric ward’s Dr Kamilla Korner-Kobele states.

But this is not the only young person’s facility to feature bean bag sofas. The Seguin Gazette-Enterprise recently revealed that volunteers from the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority fitted a number of bean bag chairs into The Lodge – a building in Texas that at-risk children can stay at.
